Philanthropy

Official Philanthropy - The Arthritis Foundation

The sisters of Alpha Omicron Pi, Pi Delta chapter are relentless in their persistence to raise money and awareness to find a cure for Juvenile Arthritis. Juvenile Arthritis is an autoimmune and inflammatory disease that affects a child’s joints, skin, eyes and possibly digestive system. Just last semester, in an event appreciated by boyfriends and girlfriends (and even professors!) across the campus, Pi Delta raised over $1600 selling roses on Valentine’s Day.  Sisters were ready, poised on their lawn, for the many forgetful young men walking by who had yet to buy their girlfriend something.

In addition, we have raised money through all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinners hosted in our chapter room, and the popular Strike Out Arthritis wiffle ball tournament on Fraternity Row, cosponsored by other fraternities and sororities.

The sisters of Pi Delta prioritize helping other philanthropies as well. In addition to co-sponsoring ten events run by other houses, last semester AOII partnered with a fraternity to raise over $12,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network at the University of Maryland’s annual TerpThon, a 12-hour dance-a-thon. Together, the young women showed how much can be accomplished when we come together as a house and as a Greek community. I mean, come on, $12,000 is pretty impressive.

As for the future, everyone is anxiously awaiting the first annual Gala for Juvenile Arthritis coming up this fall. The current philanthropy chair, Ashley Nonemaker, worked tirelessly throughout the summer to plan this unique event that will include a raffle, catered dinner, speaker, cash bar, and DJ. The Gala will bring together alumni, parents, sisters, and fellow Greeks on Parent Weekend.

Pi Delta raises the bar for themselves every year to increase funds for the Arthritis Foundation, for others’ foundations, and to have fun doing it every time. If you think you’ve seen all the amazing things we can do, just you wait!

Rose Ball to Strike Out Arthritis

Earlier this month, we hosted our first ever Rose Ball to Strike Out Arthritis! Located in the Stamp Colony Ballroom at the University of Maryland, this black-tie event featured a three course meal, silent auction, raffle, and speaker from the Arthritis Foundation. In its first year we managed to raise over $2500! Click the photo to the left to see a gallery of pictures from the event.

In Loving Memory of Kayla Libby

In early 2012, we unexpectedly lost our beloved sister Kayla Libby. Kayla dedicated her life to philanthropy and helping others. She was an inspiring and model Alpha Omicron Pi siseter and she is missed every single day. Kayla reminds us of the importance of giving to those less fortunate than ourselves. Please click the photo to the left to learn more about Kayla and the ways we continue to honor her philanthropic spirit.
